On this day: September 10th, 1978

1978 Occurrences:

  • Sony introduces the walkman
  • The Deer Hunter is one of the year’s top movies
  • Eagles “Hotel California” is the record of the year
  • The price of gas in the US ranged between 65 and 71 cents per gallon
  • The Oakland Raiders score a touchdown on “the most zany, unbelievable, absolutely impossible dream of a play” which is known today as The Holy Roller

Trailing 20-14 to the San Diego Chargers, the Oakland Raiders found themselves on the Chargers 14 yard line with time for one last play.  I couldn’t possibly do this play justice with words so enjoy…

Ken Stabler later admitted to fumbling the ball on purpose – shit why not.  At the time there was no rule in place that prevented you from gaining yardage or a touchdown on a ball you intentionally continued fumbling forward.  So the Raiders won the game 21-20 and the fumbling rule was changed 0.00000000001 seconds after the 1978 season.
