On this day: September 12th, 1993

1993 Occurrences:

  • Bill Clinton began his first term as the 42nd US President
  • Federal Agents raid religious cult in Waco, Texas
  • The Patriots went from Pat Patriot to Flying Elvis
  • The Pentium microprocessor was introduced by Intel
  • Jurassic Park, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Sleepless in Seattle were among the top movies
  • The defending champ Dallas Cowboys lose to the Buffalo Bills 13-10 to fall to 0-2. This poor start was due in large part to Emmitt Smith’s contract holdout.

After this game Jerry Jones came to his senses and paid Emmitt Smith.  And really what better leverage for Emmitt than the team getting off to a wretched start?

Some players get paid then get flabby and unmotivated… Albert Haynesworth if you will.  Emmitt Smith didn’t exactly follow this route in what is one of the greatest individual running back seasons in NFL History:

  • In just 14 games Smith led the NFL in rushing yards with 1,486
  • Smith was the NFL MVP
  • The Cowboys went 12-2 post holdout to grab the #1 seed in the NFC
  • The Cowboys went on to repeat as Super Bowl Champions defeating the Bills again 30-13.  SB MVP??? You guessed it… #22

So Emmitt got paid, was the rushing leader, NFL MVP, Super Bowl Champ, and Super Bowl MVP.  Is that all???

Nope.

Week 18 (yes there were two bye weeks in 1993, yes it was stupid) saw the 11-4 Dallas Cowboys playing in New York vs the 11-4 Giants.  At stake was the NFC East division, a bye week, and #1 seed in the NFC.

In the first half of this game Smith was tackled directly on the point of his shoulder separating it.  One wouldn’t blame Smith for tapping out with what is a brutally painful injury.  Instead Emmitt gutted through the pain in an effort that will not only live in Cowboys lore but in NFL history.

Smith rushed 32 times for 168 yards and caught 10 passes for 61 yards and a TD in the Cowboy’s 13-10 win.

What a tremendous game and what an effing season!  You wonder if it all would have gone into motion like this if not for the 0-2 start.  Cowboys fans ought to thank Bills fans…. for a 3rd time.
